Shillong police gear up to nab big fishes in drug trade

SHILLONG: As the increasing trend of drugs abuse among youths has become one of the major worrying factors in the capital city, the Shillong Police is now going all out to nab the key players and the kingpin involved in the drug racket in Shillong

Reiterating that Shillong is not just a transit route for drugs but also a destination, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of police, Davis Marak said that the police were already going after the big fishes but unfortunate part was that police had not been able to nab them red handed and without catching them red handed, Police would not have enough evidence against them to present in the court.

“However, yesterday we arrested around four people and it was a good catch in a sense that a small peddler led to a supplier. They are not small supplier but big suppliers and we have been after them for quite some time,” Marak added

Asked if low conviction rate was a factor, Marak said conviction in NDPS cases was very difficult as it was a highly procedural law. It is also a fact that there are provisions in the Act which allow the first time users or small users to be absolved if they apply to the court that they want to be rehabilitated and the law allows them to get reformed.

Stating that Shillong city is not just transit a route but also a destination, Marak said that as a destination there were some organised gangs and groups who were running the drugs racket in the city.

He said that there were some militant groups hailing from the North East itself who were indulging in drugs and arms trafficking to finance the groups

He also said, “Shillong is a place for the militant groups to re-group and lie low when there is pressure in other states and this is the reason, Police have also   activated their intelligence.”
