Clean sweep in Science top ten merit list, eight positions in Commerce stream
SHILLONG: Students of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School put up a scintillating performance bagging all the top ten positions in the Science merit list and almost making it a clean sweep in the Commerce merit list of the HSSLC examinations 2014, results of which were announced by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Monday.
Anindita Das Choudhury, who scored 461 marks out of a maximum of 500 marks, made it to the coveted top position in the Science merit list followed by Abhishek Das (457 marks) and Sneha Khatri (454).
In the Commerce stream, Sanchayita Das St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School grabbed the top position in the merit list scoring 438 marks followed by schoolmates Abhinab Bharali (434 marks) and Akash Kariwala (430).
Such was the domination by the students of St. Anthony’s that only two other schools could manage to grab a slot each in the top ten list of the Commerce stream. Juhi Paul from Seven Set Annexe Higher Secondary School (423 marks) secured the fifth position while Shama Barali of St. Edmund’s College (Higher Secondary Section), Shillong, was tenth in the list with 403 marks.
As has been a recurring trend in the State, girls outshone boys in both the Science and Commerce streams. The pass percentage of female candidates appearing as regular in Commerce stream was 80.71 while the percentage of the boys stood at 64.93. The pass percentage of female candidates appearing as non regular in Commerce stream was 50.70 while the percentage of the boys stood at 42.51.
Even in the Science stream, the girls outperformed the boys. Female regular candidates achieved a pass percentage of 78.40 as compared to the boys’ percentage of 74.47. The pass percentage of female candidates appearing as non regular in Science stream was 61.62 per cent while for male candidates it was 61.19 per cent.
There were only two candidates who appeared and passed the Vocational stream of the HSSLC Examination securing first division.
A district wise perusal of the results showed that South Garo Hills District recorded 100 per cent pass in Science stream with only three students appearing and clearing the HSSLC Science examination, while there was no student from the district in the Commerce stream.
West Khasi Hills District managed 88.19 per cent pass in the Science stream and 61.54 per cent in the Commerce stream.
West Jaintia Hills District had a pass percentage of 78.83 in the Science stream and 63.58 in the Commerce stream.
North Garo Hills District, which recorded a pass percentage of 78.95 in Science stream, did not have a single candidate in the Commerce stream.
East Khasi Hills District, considered the hub of education in the State, registered a pass percentage of 77.27 in the Science stream and an inferior pass percentage of 69.10 in the Commerce stream.
The militancy infested district of East Garo Hills had a healthy pass percentage of 64 in the Science stream whereas in the Commerce stream, the district performed exceedingly well with a pass percentage of 85.71.
Ri Bhoi District recorded pass percentages of 76.32 and 78.48 respectively in the Science and Commerce streams.
South West Khasi Hills District managed a pass percentage of 69.39 in the Science stream and 47.83 in the Commerce stream.
West Garo Hills District registered pass percentages of 64.60 and 55.26 in the Science and Commerce streams respectively.
East Jaintia Hills District was the worst performing district in terms of pass percentage in the Science stream which stood at a dismal 12.50. However, in the Commerce stream, the district had the best figure in the State at 87.93 per cent.
Incidentally, South West Garo Hills District did not have any candidate in either of the streams.
Among the schools which recorded cent per cent pass in the Science stream were Adventist Higher Secondary School, Thadlaskein, Baghmara Govt. Higher Secondary School and Holy Child Higher Secondary School, Shillong. In the Commerce stream, Christian Academy Higher Secondary School, Shillong, Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Rilbong P.N. Chaudhuri Higher Secondary School and St. Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong secured pas percentage of 100.
Incidentally, St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School failed to achieve cent per cent pass in either of the streams. In Science stream the school managed a pass percentage of 96 while in the Commerce stream the school secured a pass percentage of 91.
