Boys top merit list, girls maintain pass percentage dominance

SHILLONG: Boys topped the merit list in both the Science and Commerce streams while girls maintained their dominance in terms of pass percentage in the HSSLC results declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Saturday.
In what was almost an all-Shillong affair as far as securing a spot in the top ten was concerned, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School bagged as many as eight positions in the Science stream and three in Commerce with Prityush Haldar (Sc) and Arunava Kar Purkayastha (Com) of the institute bagging top honours in the respective streams.
St Edmund’s College (Higher Secondary Section), on the other hand, made its mark in the Commerce stream, securing five places in the top ten even as it secured two positions in the Science stream.
The only positives coming from other districts were the 8th and 9th positions secured by Don Bosco College, Tura, and St. John Bosco Boys’ Hr. Sec. School, Cherrapunjee, in Science and Commerce streams respectively.
The overall pass percentage of 73.29 in the Science stream this year is the highest in last five years. Out of the 3238 students who appeared in the examinations, 2373 emerged successful as 971 secured first dicvision, 1307 second and 69 thrid division. 23 candidates managed a simple pass.
Meanwhile, in the Commerce stream, the total pass percentage of 69.24 per cent is the second lowest when compared to the past five years. Out of the 2458 students who appeared for the examinations, 1702 were successful. The lowest percentage was in 2012 with 66.21 per cent.
While 259 students secured first division, 912 managed second and 498 passed in third division. 29 candidates made it a simple pass.
Meanwhile, in a repeat performance, girls outshone boys in terms of pass percentage with 75.39 per cent of regular and 69.66 per cent of non-regular female candidates making the cut in the Science stream against 72.97 per cent regular and 55.73 per cent non-regular male candidates.
In the Commerce stream, the pass percentage of regular female candidates was 78.36 per cent and that of the non-regular candidates was 58.54 per cent. Male regular and non-regular candidates on the other hand managed overall pass percentages of 66.52 per cent and 40.31 per cent respectively.
In the Vocational Stream all eight candidates who appeared for the examinations emerged successful.
District wise percentage
West Jaintia Hills with 86.05 per cent successful candidates emerged as the district with the highest pass percentage in the Science stream followed by South West Khasi Hills which saw 82.93 per cent of the candidates passing the examinations.

(Contd from P-1)Meanwhile, all the six candidates who appeared in the examinations from South Garo Hills failed to get through.
In the Commerce stream, East Garo Hills secured 100 per cent pass percentage followed by East Jaintia Hills with 78.26 per cent of the candidates emerging successful. At 52.31 percent, Ri Bhoi had the lowest pass percentage among the districts.
Institution wise percentage
Sacred Heart Boys’ Hr Sec School, Shillong had the highest pass percentage in the Science stream with 98 per cent. Out of the 43 students who appeared, 42 got through. It is followed by St Anthony’s Hr Sec School, RK Mission Hr Sec School and Laban Bengalee Boys’ Hr Sec School, with each securing 97 per cent.
Laban Bengalee Boys’ Hr Sec School, however, was the only institution in the State to secure 100 per cent pass in the regular category in the Science stream. Mohsin Ansari from the school secured the 9th position with highest marks in Modern Indian Languages (Hindi) and more than 61 per cent of the students secured 1st division.
In the Commerce stream, Rilbong PN Chaudhuri Hr Sec School, with ten students, and Centre for Hearing Handicapped Children in Shillong, with only one student, achieved 100 per cent pass percentage while none of the three students who appeared from Bissau College managed to make the cut.
