Fire breaks out in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital

GUWAHATI: A massive fire broke out at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH)  on Friday evening that caused grave panic and chaos  among the patients and their relatives. However, the fire could be controlled  after over an hour long fire fight.

According to preliminary reports, the fire started near the ICU for new-born babies. The fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, however, an official statement from the state fire department is being awaited in this regard.All the newborns from the ICU were immediately shifted to safety

The GMCH currently houses more than 1000 people. The fire has been brought under control by the fire tenders from Assam State Fire Service. Details about the impact of the fire are awaited.

Minister of state for health , Pyush Hazarika rushed to the GMCH as the new of fire broke out. Senior police officials too rushed to the spot.
