NPP hints at post-poll ties with Congress in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: In a surprising turn of events, the National People’s Party (NPP) has hinted that the it may even think of having a post-polls alliance with the Congress in the state.

Responding to queries of journalists, NPP State Unit President, W R Kharlukhi said that the party was contesting elections and it wanted to have a government of its own in Meghalaya.

“Here Congress is the opponent of the NPP and we don’t know about future, and we need development of the state and by working with Congress, it does not mean, we become Congress,” he said.

He also said that the party will consider having an alliance after they cross the bridge but right now, they are sure that they don’t have to work with anybody.

Denying the allegations of the Congress that NPP is a team B of BJP and that NPP is being sponsored by BJP, he said that NPP had its own ideology   and it was absolutely ridiculous on the part of the Congress to make such statements

“The Chief Minister is talking these things as if he is the treasurer of BJP,” he said   while accusing the Congress party of insulting the electorates by making such statements.

Admitting that the NPP is a part of NDA at the centre and BJP in Manipur, he however said that NPP was contesting BJP in Meghalaya and even erstwhile NCP was also a part of UPA where Agatha Sangma was a Union Minister.

While condemning the statements, Kharlukhi said the Mission documents of the NPP will be like a contract between the NPP and the people of the state and the NPP after   five years   will not make such statements

Slamming the Congress-led State Government, he said as per an assessment done by India Today, Meghalaya ranks bottom in every sector among the 10 smaller states

The senior NPP leader also said that Bihar Chief Minister may be   the Prime Minister in 2019 and this is his personal statement.

“If Nitish Kumar becomes the PM, we have to work with him for the development of the state,” he said adding it is only Nitish Kumar who can unseat BJP

Meanwhile, the party has also declared Havergil Bareh as the party candidate from West Shillong constituency while the name of the party’s candidate for Khliehriat constituency would be announced in a day or two.
